This Is How You Lose Her

...love and loss, displacement and desire, within the American immigrant experience. In This Is How You Lose Her, Díaz focuses on Yunior’s own life as a successful writer and college professor struggling through a series of passionate romantic relationships. From the neighbourhoods of Santo Domingo through the rough streets of New Jersey to every brick of Harvard’s halls, Yunior’s journey closely mirrors that of his creator. In This Is How You Lose Her, Yunior’s voice holds all of these worlds at once in a singular and intoxicating balance. The collection begins with “The Sun, the Moon, the Stars.” Yunior paints a cynical picture of the upscale Dominican resort to which his girlfriend has dragged him on the eve of their ailing relationship’s demise: “A goddamn fortress, walled away from everybody else,” with “beaches so white they ache to be trampled.” Isolated there, he finds himself surrounded by “Garcías and Colóns” who “come to relax after a long month of oppressing the masses,” and the “melanin deficient Eurofucks” who look like “budget Foucaults … too many of them in the company of a dark-assed Dominican girl.”In this passage, as in much of Díaz’s work, Yunior interrupts his narrative descriptions to directly address the reader—“Let’s just say my abuelo has never been here, and neither has yours,” and “Chill here too long and you’ll be sure to have your ghetto pass revoked, no questions asked.” This technique creates a sense of intimacy, at the same time foregrounding the......

Would You Advise a Friend to Invest in This Company

...Would You Advise a Friend to Invest in This Company Would You Advise a Friend to Invest in This Company? The information which follows is provided as prospectus of sorts to assist in your personal investment decision when considering investments in the Standard Industry Code 5311 market (department stores). The company I have researched and given consideration against competitors is Target. The following will reveal that while Target is good investment posting positive returns, they have been slower in market performance regarding their competitors, primarily Wal-Mart, over the past five years as the following chart will depict. There are however positive signs moving forward and initiatives that should bring greater dividends in future performance such as the entry into the Canadian market and redesign of store in urban areas adopting the “City Target” logo and design. At the close of 2012 Target’s total sales and diluted earnings per share reached new highs of $72.0 billion and $4.52, respectively. Target invested $3.3 billion of capital in our U.S. and Canadian businesses, and we returned over $2.7 billion to our shareholders through share repurchase and dividend payments. Target reports that full-year results were right on track with their Long-Range Plan to reach at least $100 billion in sales and $8 in earnings per share in 2017, this would nearly double their earnings per share, positive signs! The following chart and notes were taken from the 2012......

This Road We Call Life

...This Road We Call Life Name School Class Teacher-word count Due date This Road We call Life Boy Meets World had so many great things going for it. It taught children life lessons without them having to learn the hard way and there being a possibility of ruining their lives forever. The show talked about real issues going on in the world, unlike many other television shows geared toward the same audience. The show even became emotional at times. Some people in the show were better off than others, but that did not matter to the characters. They all treated each other the same. This is an idea that should be instilled in all children across America. At the same time, the show could be funny and exciting. The success of the show, however, depended on the audience. It resonated so deeply with the generation that grew up with it because the characters grew and changed along with the audience. This Road We Call Life Colcord (1997) wrote, “When this Boy Meets World Boy Meets World Wandering down this road that we call life Is what we’re doin’ It’s good to know I have friends that will always Stand by me When this Boy Meets World” (ll. 1-7). This quote from the theme song of Boy Meets World demonstrates a good perspective to have on life. The themes of the show resonated with its audience because the characters face so many real-life situations and issues throughout the course of the show. Shawn, in particular, goes through many hard times and has to learn how to......

A while later Charles Lindbergh arrived at the house and ate dinner with Ann, after having dinner he went to his study while Anne got ready for bed; meanwhile Betty went to check on the baby, and she walked into the room, she didn’t hear anything, so she ventured closer to the crib, and when she got close enough to see, she realized the baby was gone. She raced to the study to see if the baby was with his father, but when she saw that he wasn’t their, she went to see if he was with his mother, but he wasn’t with her either. Did You Know This About Argentina?

...Did You Know This About Argentina? “Don’t cry for me Argentina” is a phrase I am sure everybody has heard of at least once in their lifetime. The phrase is from a 1978 musical named Evita and was originally written and produced by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice. The most recent remake starred Madonna as the lead character Eva Peron belting out this popular song in the musical. Eva Peron was in fact a real person she was the second wife to the Argentine President Juan Peron and she served as the first lady in Argentina from 1946 until she died in 1952. But this paper is not about Eva Peron but it is about Argentina, she was just an influential member of this country and a good way to start my essay off! (Musical Heaven) Argentina is a country located in South America at the southernmost part of the continent. The country borders Uruguay, Paraguay, Chile and Bolivia. The country was first founded in a 1502 voyage by Amerigo Vespucci with Spain establishing a permanent colony on the site in 1580 where Buenos Aires is now. Spain held Argentina until a revolution declared its independence from Spain on July 9, 1816. (Argentina, Country Reports) Argentina’s national hero for this accomplishment is General Jose de San Martin. After the country declared its independence different groups within Argentina waged war on each other trying to do what was best for the country, each with its own agenda of course, but unity was finally established and the constitution was written and......

All Shakespearean Comedies End in Marriage. “as You Like It” Ends in Four. Does This Mean Shakespeare Has Presented an Idealistic View of Marriage?

...a large extent, today) marriage had a large role when trying to achieve a stable, happy life. However, debate arises when discussing whether or not ‘love’ plays an important part in an ideal marriage. ‘As You Like It’ encourages audiences to recognize marriage in many different and unconventional ways. For example, Phebe and Silvius have a marriage based on unrequited love. Phebe and Silvius have a partnership that can be interpreted as a more pessimistic view on marriage; thus, opposing the idea of idealistic marriage. Much alike Romeo from Romeo and Juliet, Silvius is written as a “Petrarchan lover,” – a man who is hopelessly in love with a woman who does not share the same feelings. This can be shown through quotations such as, “Say that you love me not, but say not so in bitterness.” Their marriage is, in many ways, far from ideal. Silvius is destined to spend the rest of his days with a woman who does not love him, while Phebe is destined to spend the rest of hers with a man whom she does not love herself. Their pairing seems to be the most negative of all the marriages as Phebe only agrees to marry him due to having to reject Ganymede. Rosalind also says, “Sell when you can: you are not for all markets,” implying Phebe has little choice when selecting a husband. This highlights a fundamental problem with the idea of marriage: settling out of fear of being left unmarried. Shakespeare brings an interesting problem to the spotlight, questioning our reasons for getting......

How Far Have the Female Characters Actually Achieved Empowerment by the End of the Films You Have Studied for This Topic?

...Empowering Women Essay How far have the female characters actually achieved empowerment by the end of the films you have studied for this topic? (35 Marks) The films I have studied for the topic of empowering women are ‘Everlasting Moments’ (D. Jan Troell, 2009) and ‘Seraphine’ (D. Martin Provost, 2008). To empower someone is to make someone stronger and confident, specifically in controlling their life and claiming their rights. In these two films I have looked at how the main female characters have been able to achieve empowerment or any obstacles that have prevented achieving empowerment. In Everlasting Moments, the film was set in the early 1900’s, which was a time of gender inequality and oppression. Women were seen as being subject to guardianship by their spouse and so were treated as simple possessions, they were unable to vote and jobs were not open equally to men and women. The central female character, Maria, is a young working class woman who experiences poverty and patriarchal oppression from her violent husband, which is further reinforced in early 1900’s Swedish society. The film, Seraphine, which was set in 1914 in France, is about an undiscovered working class female painter named Seraphine, who again experiences social and gender inequality. In Seraphine, there are both obstacles that Seraphine faces to empowerment and ways in which she could be considered as empowered. An obstacle she faces is her social status; as a working class woman she is......

What You Know About This

...Dorothy Robinson Culture and Society May 13, 2012 Wendell Johnson The social situation that I would like to address in this essay is the problem of crime in our society. We all know that crime is on the rise, most likely due to inequalities in race, education, social class, skills, financial status, and religious beliefs and values. Of course, both functionalists and conflict theorists are marco-level, but have differing views on the reasons for, and reactions to, crime in our society today. Interactionist on the other had is micro-level, meaning it is not that useful to the world. Functionalists believe that crime is important for a society. Crime shows other member of the society what is right and wrong. Social agreement decides how right and wrong is determined. Crime can lead to social change, say functionalists, because the existence of crime proves to the people in the society that the government does not overly control the citizens. Crime can also help the economy of a society by creating jobs for law enforcement officers, psychiatrists, and probation officers. However, even in a functionalist society, too much crime can be bad for the group, causing it to lose the standard harmony and ultimately causing the society to failure. Also it is suggested that the existence of crime is functional in its ability to gather families and communities together for a common purpose. Conflict theorists feel that crime is products of a struggle for power and control.......
