J'Accuse, Zola and the Dreyfus Affair Mathieu to start a campaign to prove Alfred’s innocence. The army had wanted to keep the trial out of the public sphere and deal with it as swiftly as possible but Mathieu Dreyfus ensured that people were made aware of his brother’s plight, even though the public were not always on his side. With the start of Mathieu’s campaign came the involvement of the daily press, and this meant that the Dreyfus case could no longer be kept behind closed doors. Articles informing of the arrest of an army officer charged with treason appeared in the press soon after the court case, but information was incomplete and the newspapers did not know who or what exactly was involved. The matter properly came to the public’s attention on the 31st of October in an evening issue of Le Soir, which identified the perpetrator as Alfred Dreyfus and the following day the press was saturated with articles on the affair. Most notably, on the 1st November 1984 the main headline in La Libre Parole read "High treason! Jewish officer arrested! Captain Dreyfus!" This was to be the beginning of a virulent campaign against the Jewish officer by a popular nationalist and anti-Semitic newspaper founded by Edouard Drumont, who used the affair to propagate anti-Jewish ideas and consequently helped contribute to a rise in anti-Semitism. As soon as the first article appeared in the press, public opinion polarized into two camps: the Dreyfusards and the anti-Dreyfusards (this is not to say that the whole......

The Madoff Affair

...The Madoff Affair Bernard Madoff was a former stock broker who was involved in the largest Ponzi scheme in history from which he earned billions of dollars. A Ponzi scheme is an illegal operation in which all profit that each investor earns is actually just the individuals own money or another investor’s money that is just cycling through the system. There is not actually any profit being earned through the investment. A Ponzi scheme is able to stay in business as long as there is a steady flow of money being invested into it from the investors. The reason that so many people get involved with these schemes is because the investments are offered with very high interest rates. This scheme is not very sturdy however, because there are very few earnings to the amount of money owed to the investors. So the scheme will either fall apart on its own, or if it succeeds greatly it is usually detected by the authorities. The SEC was alerted three times in 2001 that Madoff was believed to be running a Ponzi scheme, but there were no actions taken. The first time that there were actions taken were in 2006. It is unbelievable that a man could get away with such a large crime for so long without being questioned. This may have been because at the same time he was running this scheme he was also operating another high-profile business; this one was of course legal. In this business Madoff was the middleman between buyers and sellers of stock. His Ponzi scheme was not......

Madoff Affair

...While the Madoff controversy was a highly public topic, this documentary helped fill in this infamous story from the start. At the start of Bernie Madoff career, he had a very successful market making business. He originally would pay large institutions for their orders, or “flow”. After initial success, he then went on to manage some investment funds. His returns were outrageously high and people could only speculate as to why. Since he had his market making business, people assumed he must have been illegally “front-running”. Front-running is when he gets a very large order for a stock transaction, and jumps in front of the transaction with personal money. This allows the person front-running to be basically using insider information, since they know a large transaction is about to occur. One person, Harry Markopolos, discovered something was wrong. When he finally discovered the scheme, he went to the SEC. Originally, they took no action. A year later, Markopolos submitted another more detailed report. He basically led the SEC “with a map and a flashlight” and they still couldn’t discover the fraud. When the scheme was finally discovered, there were many government meetings to figure out why the SEC didn’t find it. At first, they dodged the questions stating it would interfere with ongoing investigations. Later, they admit that the SEC has been extremely understaffed and under budgeted. Greed played a large role in the affair as well. Considering people were......

A7D Affair

...Reading, the A7D affair case, I immediately reminded me of the Firestone tire malfunction that I read in my public relations class, where a recall was done to all customers who purchased their tires. The biggest questioning factor within this case contradicts personal moral for business success. Would changes of design been made? Several practices discussed within Chapter 1 were exemplified throughout this case such as groupthink, diffusion of responsibility, bystander apathy, self-interest, conscience and moral judgment. The replacement design was not possible to complete for the schedule of delivery that was promised to customers. Since Lawson brought the issue to Warren’s attention, he denied the design being the probable cause. Once Lawson went to Sink, it put him in a difficult position. Because if Sink approved the design it wouldn’t look good, Although Vandivier did demonstrate the practice of “groupthink”, the blame was constantly pushed off to another in this company crisis. Vandivier was outweighing the costs of his personal life benefits (family life) vs. business benefits when determining his direction of ethics and decisions. Failure of communication within employees and departments was detrimental and therefore the organizational norms should be revised within the corporation. According to Shaw and Barry (2013), “business has no ethics” (p.5). When first reading chapter 1, I was in a bit of disgust from this statement but after reviewing this......

The Longoria Affair

...The Longoria Affair Master in Arts/Leadership Communications The Longoria Affair What had become an unfortunate and devastating aspect of World War II (WWII) suddenly saw the small town of Three Rivers, Texas thrust into the national spotlight. The untimely death of Private Felix Longoria, a hero and patriot became the symbol of Mexican Americans, while his story, The Longoria Affair provided proud Mexican Americans a purpose to unify and expand their struggle for civil rights in the decades to follow. The far reaching impacts would go down for many as the turning point in history for the civil rights of Mexican Americans, while for others involved, it became a cornerstone to some very powerful political careers. Three Rivers The small South Texas town of Three Rivers, just 100 Miles from the Mexican border was like many towns across the country that shaped itself along a racial divide. There were clear signs of segregation between the towns Anglo Saxon community and its Hispanics residents and this was even evident down to the street names used respectively on each side of town. The unwritten rules within racially divided towns often were born from the heart of discrimination and could often point to the underlying violation of civil rights. Evidence of such acts was often subtle but it was commonly known that a Mexican American for example could not purchase a home within the Anglo Saxon community. Three Rivers on the contrary also had residents that were......

Public Affairs Memo

...Memorandum To: Attorney General Eric Holder CC: Department of Justice; U.S. Senate Committee on the Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime and Terrorism From: Kieran Wheeler Date: 2/28/2012 ------------------------------------------------- Re: S. 436 Fix Gun Checks Act of 2011: Policy Memo I. Abstract/ Executive Summary The Fix Gun Checks Act of 2011 is a bill that was proposed to the United States Senate by New York Senator Charles Schumer. The bill is meant to better ensure that individuals who are meant to be prohibited from purchasing firearms within the United States are unable to do so, by making sure that they are placed in a national background check database. This bill is meant to put an end to many of the gun-related incidents that have resulted in deaths in the United States as a result of individuals being able to purchase weapons although they would have otherwise been prohibited. Hopefully by financially penalizing those states that do not provide an adequate amount of information regarding those individuals who are prohibited from purchasing firearms, these states will start to abide by the bill. As a result, this bill should make the United States a safer place for all of its citizens. II. Introduction There is no doubt that firearms pose a major threat to the safety of criminal justice agencies and United States citizens alike. This holds especially true when these firearms fall into the hands of criminals or those who are simply unlicensed and...

...that they face. Vulnerability may stem from personal incapacities, social status, lack of support, lack of finances, age, gender, ethnicity, and how these factors interact in the complexity of their relationship over the life course of the individual. Facing the Factors The intent of this paper is to examine the relationship between the physical factors in American society and the factors that affect the individual classifying them as vulnerable to explain the rise in homelessness and how policy interventions, both social and economic, education and income policies, as well as health interventions can affect values or how the society views the vulnerable, that is whether they are victims or sinners, and thus whether they should provide public assistance through a new model program that does not currently exist in the community that will deliver and provide positive factors that decrease or eliminate the factors that account for poverty and homelessness in America. By first analyzing the strengths and weakness, better known as the factors that impact the poverty stricken and homeless, we can better understand the event or events that lead to this precarious situation. Since income is often related to poverty, and poverty is largely associated with homelessness, we can attribute economic status as one of the causes of poverty. In January of 2011, the National Alliance to End Homelessness released data that outlined the scope of the problem in a report titled State of......

...fearing for their lives and also causing thousands of pounds worth of damage to the prisons, thirdly because of the first two problems the media misinterpret this causing the public opinions on prison officers to be overwhelmingly negative, because of this less of the public will want to become a prison officer causing the prison staff to be lower than it should be. Because of the recent terror attacks in Paris a lot of countries have been on high alert of terror attacks, especially Britain, civilians are petrified of these “inevitable” attacks and because of this it is causing the public to become racist towards the Muslim population of this country thinking it was these ordinary British civilians that committed these atrocities, there has been many incidences of white brits attacking (verbally and physically) Muslim brits, recently there was an incident on the underground in London where a white male was verbally abusing a young Muslim woman, the woman was defenceless and could easily have been physically attacked luckily the other passengers sided with the young girl, they threw the racist attacker out of the train when it came to a halt. ...Rebuilding the Public Affairs program at the Navy Region Southwest Reserve Component Command after four years of no existence can be a challenge within the command and in the Southwest regional offices. Recently, leadership has begun revitalizing the program with the use of a Public Affairs Officer that has been permanently assigned to deal with the issues of starting a Public Affairs program. Summary The Public Affairs(PA) program has been nonexistent in the last four years at the Navy command, Navy Region Southwest Reserve Component Command (NRSWRCC). The program has had no one in charge of the program at the command or its subordinate commands throughout the Southwest. The program lacks leadership, implementation, structure, training, equipment, and manpower. Background Public Affairs (PA) is a term for the formal offices of the branches of the United States Department of Defense whose purpose is to deal with the media and community issues. The term is also used for numerous media relations offices that are created by the U.S. military for more specific limited purposes. PA offices are staffed by a combination of officers, enlisted personnel, civilian officials and contract professionals.
