Performance Appraisals

...Performance appraisals are a hot subject in management and organizations these days. Organizations rely on employees to complete business tasks in a timely and competent manner because their reputation may depend on the performance of its employees. It’s essential that organizations develop a performance management system to assist in evaluating their employees. The performance management system is usually used for annual employee evaluations. The performance management system can be performed in various formats such as rating employees on a scale of 1 to 10 or giving a rating of excellent, good, average, or poor. Now, that I have discussed what performance management system is, it’s time that I elaborate on an example of this system. I would like to discuss the “rank and yank” philosophy and if I agree or disagree with it. I will also discuss Burger King’s performance appraisal. According to the textbook, “rank and yank requires managers to force-rank employees according to some preset distribution” (Milkovich, Newman, and Gerhard, 2011, p.376). With this process, an organization ranks their employees against each other and then terminates the lowest end of the rankings. The terminating component of this process is considered as the yank. I have read that more than 50 percent of the Fortune 500 companies used a form of this system. But some companies use rank and yank only to get rid of their lowest performing employees in times of financial crisis. The allege......

Performance Appraisal Systems and Their Impact on Employee Compensation.

...Performance appraisal systems and their impact on employee compensation. Daniel Schroder MBA 533 Human Resources Saint Leo University Professor Michael J. McCabe J. D. In any organization, employee compensation and benefits are a sizable percentage of the cost associated with running a business. Although most employees would consider themselves under paid, most companies would consider their employees as being fairly or even over compensated. The determination of employee compensation and benefits is often based on factors such a seniority, dependability, and quality and quantity of the work performed. The decision of which employees will receive higher compensation, and how much the increase will be is often determined by many factors. The overall profitability of the business, the individual productivity of the employee or department, a across the board cost of living increase, and often the factors are nothing more than the suggestions of a manager or the owner of the business. In many small businesses these simple systems for compensation determination may be fine, and individual needs of the employee may be just as big a determining factor as any other reason related to performance. In larger businesses it is important to design, implement, and maintain a performance appraisal system, as well as a system that compensates its employees based on the outcomes of the appraisal system. A well designed employee appraisal system should include an evaluation by the...

Performance Appraisals

...Performance Appraisals Part I: Importance of Performance Appraisals Defining Performance Appraisals Performance appraisals serve to measure how an employee performs against the standards established by the company. Performance appraisals evaluate an employee’s current or past performance and compare them to his or her performance standards. For an appraisal process to be efficient, should include setting work standards, evaluating the employee’s actual performance and comparing it to the set standards, providing timely feedback to the employee in hopes that performance deficiencies are corrected, improve, or continue above expectations. Performance appraisals can sometimes be perceived as a nightmare and a waste time for supervisors and employees, as well. Sadly, performance appraisals are rarely perceived as management tools as for many corporations employees appraisals are nothing more than annual appointments to determine salary increases. However, when considering the actual objectives of a performance appraisal one can realize that it leads to beneficial consequences that relate to pay awards, potential talent identification, and widens organizational employees’ development perspectives. In addition, a performance appraisal provides that particular working occupation-persons match and mismatch is identified by looking into the actual and potential problem areas. In simpler terms, performance appraisals should be regarded as a management tool that serves to strength...

Performance Appraisal System Discussion

...Performance Appraisal System Discussion – Part I Team D University of Phoenix Human Capital Management – HRM 531 Scott Beck August 30, 2010 Abstract As a group, it was discussed the means of converting an individual appraisal system into an appraisal system for team application. In discussion, the points considered include: a) differences between the two appraisal systems, b) difficulties of evaluating team performance, c) unique needs of a team appraisal system, and d) team motivations and expectations. Performance Appraisal System Discussion – Part I Learning Team D requested individual performance appraisals from each learning team member. Following a review of four submitted, it was agreed to move forward with Metin Natzli’s submission. The selected performance appraisal lends itself well to the 360 degree view approach. Each team member evaluates the team, from their own perspective, and the supervisor provides the final evaluation using the same form. Use of the standardized form allows for ease in comparison and grade compilation. The performance review measures the job-relevant strengths and weaknesses of the newly created sales team. Team members access the form electronically through Interclean’s intranet. As each team member moves through the form, answers are saved and transmitted to the supervisor upon completion. All fields require an answer prior to advancing to the next section; this ensures a thorough evaluation. ......

Performance Appraisal

...Research Paper The role of performance appraisal system on the development of human resource of Komenda College of education Introduction In every administration, whether private or public, there exist laid down aims and objectives that are to be achieved within a specific period. Nevertheless, these cannot be possible if the organisation focuses only on its financial and physical resources. There is therefore the need to concentrate on the human resource as well. This is necessary because it is only the people who are employed in the institution that can put together both the financial and physical resources of the institution in order to achieve its aims and objectives. With this in mind, each institution has to take the planning of its human resource as one of the most important issue. Pinnington and Edwards (2000) have defined “human resource planning as “the systematic and continuing process of analysing an organisation’s human resource needs under changing conditions and developing personnel policies appropriate to the long-term effectiveness of the organisation”(pp. 22). Cascio (1996) indicated that this can be done quarterly, bi-annually or annually and through some interrelated activities stated by Cascio (1996) and which include the following: i. Personnel inventory which is done to assess the current human resource base and how they are currently being......

...Employee Training and Development The performance Appraisal System (Case Study) Prepared By: Khaled Mohamed Amer Date: December 19, 2014 Case Overview: James karter is a new employee in the training and development department of Yarra Bank. James was shocked by an unprofessional & unfair way of appraisal by his manager, Henry Austin who is known of his autocracy and decisions imposition exploiting his 34 years service and experience in Yarra bank to impose his opinions and decisions without referring to any standards and conditions that determine the appraisal regulations that assigned to be practiced by both managers and employees, and that might have negative effect on the employees particularly and the organization performance generally. ...might reduce motivation and lead to high turnover because of little progress for certain employees (Bohlander & Snell, 2009). Use of formal criteria of performance evaluation and provision of well-grounded feedback on the results of performance review is going to lead to many significant improvements regarding employee compensation, recruitment, improvement of performance of the whole company, etc. Formal evaluation of workers will also reduce potential subjectivity bias regarding employee performance. In case of performance assessment involving elements of 360 degree feedback or similar approaches (Linman, 2004), balanced opinion of the team will be used for performance estimates rather than personal views of a certain manager. 2. After reading through the course materials, and learning more about the various applications of performance feedback, what response can she give Mel to explain the value and application of that feedback? This should be a well developed response for Mel incorporating concepts you are learning related to appraising performance. Formal evaluation of performance and corresponding managerial feedback are expected to lead to enhanced engagement of employees into the working process, better explanations of managerial decisions and better shaped expectations. These changes can dramatically change performance of the whole company, and are going to result in significant improvement, main of which are listed below. First of all, distribution of......

Performance Appraisal

...INTRODUCTION Performance Evaluation or Appraisal is the process of deciding how employees do their jobs. Performance here refers to the degree of accomplishment of the tasks that make up an individual’s job. It indicates how well an individual is fulfilling the job requirements. Often the term is confused with efforts, which means energy expended and used in a wrong sense. Performance is always measured in terms of results. Definition Performance appraisal is method of evaluating the behavior of employees in the work spot, normally including both the quantitative and qualitative aspects of job performance. It is a systematic and objective way of evaluating both work-related behavior and potential of employees. It is a process that involves determining and communicating to an employee how he or she is performing the job and ideally, establishing a plan of improvement. Performance appraisal is broader term than Merit Rating. In the past managers used to focus on the traits of an employee while ranking people for promotions and salary increases. Employee’s traits such as honesty, dependability, drive, personality, etc., were compared with others and ranked or rated. The attempt was to find what the person has (traits) rather than what he does (performance); the focus was on the input and not on the output. This kind of evaluation was open to criticism because of the doubtful relationship between performance and mere possession of certain......

Performance Appraisal

...Performance Appraisal system Performance appraisal is a system of review and evaluation of an individual or team’s job performance. An effective system assesses accomplishments and evolves plans for development. Performance management is a process that significantly affects organizational success by having managers and employees work together to set expectations, review results, and reward performance. Its goal is to provide an accurate picture of past and / or future employee performance. To achieve this, performance standards are established.   I. The Performance Appraisal Process Many of the external and internal environmental factors previously discussed can influence the appraisal process. Legislation requires that the appraisal systems be nondiscriminatory. The labor union might affect the appraisal process by stressing seniority as the basis for promotions and pay increases. Factors within the internal environment can also affect the performance appraisal process. The type of corporate culture can serve to help or hinder the process. Identification of specific goals is the starting point for the PA process. After specific appraisal goals have been established, workers and teams must understand what is expected from them in their tasks. Informing employees of what is expected of them is a most important employee relations task. At the end of the appraisal period, the appraiser observes work performance and evaluates it against established performance standards. The......
