Map Out an Important Goal

1. Short-Term Educational Goal My specific goal: Become adjusted to being back in school. Set up reading, study, and assignment schedules. Change and adjust my schedule to coordinate the best time management for my schedule between work, school, and my personal life.

a. Actions I plan to take to achieve my goal. What will I do to support my goal . . .
1) Today I finished all of the assigned reading for week one and I will finish the first written assignments. I also created folders on my computer for the course and each week of the course. I also loaded the reading assignment as audio books on to my I Pod because in my job I drive frequently and can listen to the reading assignments on my daily journeys.
2) This week I will write out my schedule for class, study, and reading for the next week. I will continue listening to the audio books during the times I am on the road. Finish my second written assignment by Tuesday. I will check with my academic counselor and enrollment counselor to make sure all of my transcripts have arrived at the university and my financial aid is in order.
3) This month I will continue to stay ahead of my reading and course assignments and rework my daily schedule, if needed, so as to help me obtain a good system for all of my future classes. I will continue to keep in contact with my academic and financial counselors to make sure all of my matters are in line and where they should be as well as ask any questions that I need to have an answer for.
4) This year I will continue to stay ahead of all of my schoolwork and maintain my schedule in addition to refining it to make it the best I can. I will continue to communicate not only with my counselors but also with my instructor and classmates. I will learn from any mistakes I will or may have made.

2. Long-Term Educational Goal
a. My specific goal: To attain a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Computer Information Technology with a concentration in Networking and Telecommunications as well as maintain a minimum grade point average of a 3.0 with the desire to advance to obtain my master’s degree.

b. Actions I plan to take to achieve my goal. What will I do to support my goal . . .
1) Today I am finishing my first week assignments and readings. I have finished my daily planner for the next couple of weeks. During breaks from the work, assignments and schoolwork I started some research into career paths for my degree program.

2) This week make sure that my enrollment and my transcripts are in order. Check in with my counselors both academic and financial to open my lines of communication for my route to graduation. I will continue to learn how to work with my schedules to learn to be comfortable with how to use them to the best of my abilities

3) This year I need to evaluate what I have learned and will learn by the use of strict schedules and apply it to my educational future success and my business and personal success. I will make changes to my schedules and habits to help me achieve the goals I have and will set for myself.

3. Goal Development Analysis

a. What types of techniques did you use to set your educational goals? To be perfectly honest I did not use any techniques to set my educational goals except for my life experiences. I have set my educational goals based on my enjoyment of computers and wanting to understand how the structures of computers work. I have taken on a new career recently and believe that in the field of work that I am in as well as many other career fields that knowledge of computer and network administration is extremely important. After finishing the reading materials for week one, I am learning and beginning to understand that there are many techniques available with setting goals and achieving them. The technique that would most apply is that the major I have chosen was because I have an intrigue and interest in computers and see a long-term potential in a degree in the field I have chosen.

b. What kind of techniques will you use to manage your time so that you can achieve your goals? After finishing the reading materials for week one, I am developing a strategy that will be an ongoing project to help me manage my time to finish all of my reading, writing and work assignments as accurately and time efficiently as I am able. Prioritizing my goals is the first technique to be set into motion. The use of a planner to schedule my daily, weekly and monthly tasks to make the best use of my time and help control the stress levels that may arise is the second technique to be put into place. I will emphasize to avoid procrastinating. Between school and work my free time becomes substantially less and procrastination will take away from my free time that helps me to alleviate the stress levels. This is still a work in progress and I believe that throughout my life I will always need to continue that work.

c. What kind of techniques will you use to manage the stress that you may encounter in achieving your goals? I will set a timetable on all of my schoolwork and when it is to be accomplished. I will work extremely hard to keep up with that time table and not procrastinate. Learning and living by this will also help me fine tune my career so that my free time can be greater to relax and unwind and will help me deal with the stress that may and probably will develop at times during my undergraduate years. I will use a daily planner to help me keep up with all of my time tables so that when I have free time I will make sure that I schedule some exciting adventures as well as relax and clear my mind.

...The Goal Essay 17 September 2011 Management Concepts in “The Goal” In the book “The Goal” there are very many examples that go along with basic management principles. One concept that is highlighted in the beginning of the book is crashing. Alex Rogo, one of UniCo’s plant managers, has to use additional funds to pay for overtime for employees. He also has to relax many of the plant work specifications by leaving many machines idle while everyone in the plant focuses on getting one order out the door. Another concept that is discussed is the difference between productivity and efficiency, the author Eliyahu Goldratt compares productivity and efficiency through the issue with the robots. Even though the robots are increasing the efficiency of the production of parts they are not increasing the productivity. Another very critical management concept is time estimations. An example of this is when Rogo goes on a hike with his son and some friends. When Rogo first determines the time estimates for how long the hike will take he has very deterministic time estimates, when really they should have been more probabilistic. In many ways “The Goal” highlights key terms of management but some of the main terms highlighted are productivity, crashing, and time estimations. In this story, Bill Peach (division vice-president), followed the status of a specific order number. He discovered not only was the order incomplete, but also seven weeks late and unassembled. The countries with low HDI's, like Africa, tend to have the highest population growth rate.
