CREATIVITY and INNOVATION
“My worthiness is all my doubt –
His merit – all my fear –
Contrasting which my quality does however – appear.”
- APJ Abdul Kalam

Creativity is necessary for Innovation. Innovativeness is made, not born. Creativity can be inborn or comes in sparks .Creativity is the prerequisite for Innovation. In an essay on Creativity Teresa Amabile and others describe innovation as “the successful implementation of creative ideas within the an organization”Creativity which includes invention is the starting point of innovation , a necessary but not sufficient condition of it. we can never segregate the two terms and it goes hand in hand creativity and innovation are like sparks of the same thunder or lightning-if the fire of creativity is taken up it is innovation, and sometimes the same fire can even destroy the existing creative ideas taking up new ones. According to political scientist and economist Schumpeter(who lived from 1883 to 1950) he says that waves of innovation crash down on established enterprise, washing them away and leaving new ones in their place, seems particularly appropriate.
Objectives of the study:
1.Mapping the definitions of innovation and creativity
2.Concept development methods through creativity.
3.Analysis of correlation of creativity and innnovation

Business Model
This is the sense of innovation in the broader context of companies and markets. Innovation’s meaning here is to alter the landscape.”Ray Meads”: A patentable solution (external verified uniqueness) with a differentiated business model that changes the basis of business for that specific industry sector. “Julia Fischer Baumgartner”: My definition of radical innovation: a new product, process, or system that replaces its accepted predecessor and renders it obsolete. “avigail berg”: Reorganize the particles with new added components that shift the value to new business opportunities.
Applied Invention
Invention is the creation of something new., It’s when an invention becomes useful to others that it becomes an innovation.”Jatin H. DeSai”: Creativity is when you use money to get ideas. Innovation is when you use ideas to make money.Thomas Mathiasen: Innovation: what is New, Useful and Applied. “Braden Kelley”: Innovation transforms the useful seeds of invention into solutions valued above every existing alternative. “Harry Vardis”: Ideas that pass through the business model and meet with acceptance by the end users. “Peter Balbus”: Ideation is applied knowledge; creativity is applied ideation; invention is applied creativity; and innovation is the successful commercialization or adoption of radical invention. “Barry Bassnett”: Creativity is what happens when imagination has focus; innovation is what happens when creativity has a bottom line; enterprise is what happens when innovation meets ability, entrepreneurship is what happens when all the aforementioned are put on the same cart and passion becomes the fuel.
Creativity
The internal spring of innovation: creativity. This sense of innovation reflects our personal, individual roles in it.”Edson Menezes”: Innovation can be a thin line connecting the intuitive, the rational and the market: the gift, the servant and the server. “Robert Bastarache”: Value + Creativity + Execution = Innovation. “Lars Christensen”: Innovation is to dare to challenge mainstream thinking and behaviour pattern. “Robert Jacobson”: Innovation is seeing things differently. Implementing innovation is getting others to, also.
Problem-Solving
In this meaning of innovation, the focus is on addressing issues and challenges. The existing mode of operation has issues, and a new approach is needed.”Madhusudan Rao”: Finding Newer & Better bottles to recycle the old wine. End objective remains the same but you want to achieve it in a better way. “Kurt Nahikian”: Innovation results when a new approach is applied to an old problem that makes lasting and far-reaching changes in behavior. “Bill Flynn”: Innovation is the creation of solutions to problems that have opposing requirements.
Unmet User Needs
This is a “classic approach to innovation”. It’s very much along the lines of Clayton Christensen’s “job to be done”. The term here is “users”, as the unmet needs may be for customers as well as other people in a system or value chain.”Mike Dalton”: The organization-wide process of finding and profitably serving unmet market needs. “A Michele Davies”: The creation of new products or services which provide value to my marketplace in one form or another, and which use my existing resources. “Uday Pasricha”: Something is innovative when it creates a tangible added value for both user/developer; using existing, wasted or yet unnoticed resources. ”Hans Haringa”: Innovation: ‘something’ used by ‘some’ but opposed by ‘many’ but over time accepted by all. “Ellen Weber PhD”: An invention or intervention – that shows evidence of a valued solution, garners support of decision makers, and offers mutual benefits for a wider community – by drawing insights from diverse people across several related fields. “Dick Lee”: Delivering exceptional to the most important customer in the value chain, all the time, every time. “Hutch Carpenter”: A change in a product offering, service, business model or operations which meaningfully improves the experience of a large number of stakeholders.
Creativity can also be enhanced in an organization or persons through some of the tested methods .it has also been found in many research studies that creativity can be enhanced over a period of time at least a minimum of 2 years to be really productive .appropriability of innovation plays an important role. Creativity can be enhanced by following methods in developing an innovative idea creativity can also be simulated or created by modifying some environmental factors. Concept development Methods:
Creative mechanisms also exist and there are different creativity techniques and tools available ,though creativity is an inborn talent ,methods exist where creativity can be developed .the creative concept development techniques can be grouped into three mechanisms creativity cannot flourish in boundaries but still it can flourish in the ever changing
1.unstructured creative mechanisms
2. structured creative mechanisms
3.highly structured creative mechanisms.
Unstructured creative mechanisms:
BrainStorming:The basic rule is all ideas should be accepted without criticism.SCAMPER technique can be used for brainstorming ideas
S—Any substitute idea available?
C—Is a combination of ideas possible?
A—what can you adapt?
M—How could you magnify, minimize, and suggest multiple ideas?
P—what could you put to other use?
E—Anything else?
R—Any rearrangement and reversal possible
Nominal Group Technique: (NGT)In this technique all the members are asked to write down their ideas after the problem is given, if irrelevant ideas are presented such ideas are removed and all relevant ideas are jotted down and accordingly ideas are clustered.
Competitive review technique: The activities of competitors are tracked and based on that an idea is developed.
Avoidance technique: questions are asked why we choose a particular idea and why not other ideas.
Big winner technique: how ,winners have achieved success their reasons are evaluated and analysed to find out what are the factors which led to their success and the factors are taken into consideration to develop something new or use the same existing idea.
Creative Stimuli Technique: certain words are brainstormed and their associations are analysed and developed and in the process a new innovative idea is developed
Synetics: the notion in this process is creativity cannot be achieved in a sequential process and hence in this process of creativity unrelated topics are discussed and it is later connected to the original idea.this is also an effective technique.
Bunches of Banana technique: a dull atmosphere is triggered by giving a statement and based on those statements some unrelated or new concepts or ideas may develop.

Relationship Between Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Creativity

...to absorb and implement new ideas, but also some emerging developing countries, are taking measures to inspire entrepreneurship and innovation with purposes of benefiting economic development from these competitive advantages (Stoneman, 1995; Zhao, 2001). It is universally held that entrepreneurship and innovation are complementary and their combination can efficiently contribute to economy performance (Grupp, 2001; Stoneman, 1995). During the transfer from idea creation to eventually economy development, innovation is supposed to be a necessary condition, but it also demonstrates great insufficiency which can be completed by entrepreneurship’s mediating effects (Audretsch, 1995; Camp, 2005). This essay will primarily conduct a brief definition of entrepreneurship and innovation while introduce the role of problem solving and creativity, and thereby observe the synergy between entrepreneurship and innovation. Then theoretical and practical analysis will be made in their repective relationship with economy development. Ultimately, the holistic realtionship between entrepreneurship, in conjunction with innovation, and economy development will be discussed. Entrepreneurship and innovation are inclined to be misinterpreted identical since they both indicate creation and new development, but meanings they rootly represent are distinctive. Innovation is an instrument that intergrates, disperses and upgrades extant techniques and knowledge, then acts as a “conduit” for......

Innovation, Creativity, and Design

...Innovation, Creativity, and Design Jerry Vaval Prof. Dr. Milena Loubeau Week 1 Being an employee of a very large and historical organization practicing innovation is something I focus on to make a difference in my organization. This paper will briefly define, compare, and contrast innovation, creativity, and design. On the "Merriam-Webster" (2014) website one of the definitions for innovation is “the act or process of introducing new ideas, devices, or methods”. Webster defines design as “to plan and make something for specific use or purpose”. Creativity is defined as “the ability to create” according to Webster. Often time’s innovation and creativity are used in similar reference to each other because they both introduce change to a particular situation. The introduction of change makes innovation and creativity similar but they are essentially different, innovation leads to new ideas usually to solve an ongoing problem and or improve a situation or organization. Creativity is different from innovation because it takes that initial idea and finds a way to implement the new idea to make it successful. Design brings innovation and creativity together and serves many purposes in the innovation process. Design is an important strategic tool which can be used to bring different people with different mindsets to a common ground. Stamm stated “Design is the conscious decision-making process by which information (an idea) is transformed into an outcome, be it tangible......

Innovation, Creativity, and Design

...Innovation, Creativity and Design Goals and objectives are important to a successful strategy of any business. Innovation, creativity, and design are tools that enable us to build an idea or product able to generate income for an organization. Understanding which attribute is most important is difficult without first defining each one to realize how they interact with one another. Definitions “Creativity is the act of generating an idea and is done by an individual, not a team,” (Von Stamm, 2008). In addition to this understanding, Von Stamm further states, “Creativity alone, to come up with ideas, is not enough. In order to reap the benefits, one needs to do something with it” (p. 3). Innovation is left described as creativity plus the successful execution in the marketplace of the idea. Govindarajan (2010) takes that definition even further by stating, “Innovation is creativity multiplied by execution. Multiplication is used rather than sum because, if either creativity or execution has a score of zero, then the capacity for innovation is zero” (para. 2). When defining innovation, one could use Von Stamm’s description or Govidarajan’s account; either way creativity clearly comes first. It is becoming clear, however, that creativity is useless without the innovation to bring the idea to life. The third attribute is design, which simply put, is the process used to execute the original idea. This basic level of understanding of the three attributes is important to the......

Creativity and Innovation

...Then I got a perfect answer about the puzzling question; there is a difference between creativity and innovation. People could always be creative, not everyone are able to translate the creativity to a notable innovation. The academic definition is more than words for me, making me knew myself much better. I am definitely a creative person, lots of fantastic ideas are living in my head, but that’s not enough, I also need to explore them deeper with my observation, knowledge, perception, experience, much more than just a active brain. In summary, knowing yourself is creative seems not that important when compared with whether you could really do something. But it’s like a confidence base, no building could be completed without a base on the ground. I feel lucky to recognize this and passionate to achieve things with my creativity. Environment is obviously important when we want to finish a building, mission could never be completed in a swamp. Similar to that, whether an good idea could be implemented or not is closely related to the company culture. Company culture is invisible, you could never tell what it looks like or touch it by hand, but it just exists every in the company. Actually, culture includes the organization's vision, values, norms, systems, symbols, language, assumptions, beliefs, and habits. It can be observed by the behavior of employees, the relationship between colleagues , the attitudes of superiors to junior staff, etc. The video in class about Pixar......

Creativity and Innovation in Business Management

...Creativity and Innovation are two different terms and they technically have different meanings. Creativity means originality, imagination and inventiveness that are brought out through resourcefulness. Innovation, on the other hand refers to modernization and improvement over an existing idea. In this way, it is true that creativity and innovation are two different terms and cannot be used interchangeably. Yet, they have been used interchangeably in several areas or walks of life, including business and management as well as technology. In this way the main distinction between creativity and innovation, being the originality has been ignored and as the line between creativity and innovation is thin, it becomes even more difficult to distinguish between these terminologies (Hofstede, 1980). Another important thing required is that there is a managerial transition as well as a cognitive transition. This helps the firm develop and also be open to new ideas. As there is more and more learning in the organization, automatically there would be a chance for a break through innovation (Davila, T., Epstein, M. J., and Shelton, 2006). DIFFERENCES Innovation is an important aspect of growth and development of individuals, organizations, cultures and societies. Innovation and creativity refer to bringing in new ideas to life. Innovation can be achieved strategically through a process of creativity. This helps bring in a lot many new ideas in the firm and also develop a platform...

Innovation Begins with Creativity

...Innovation Begins with Creativity Creativity and the creative process is seen as a human trait. These are my ideas that have been informed with some research on what creativity means to humans and how it promotes innovation. The impact of creativity on innovation is bringing together connections from someone's experience and producing something new, this is creativity and in turn innovation. Creativity requires different kinds of thinking and draws on the richness of someone’s experience, not the depth of knowledge in one field. A creative or innovation person should be able to see the big picture and gather ideas from different places. If an individual is too focused on one task, it blinds them from the ideas all around them. Circumstance plays a large role in shaping someone's creative ability as well as the support from those around them. This is a more personal approach to creative thought and a valid one. Creativity in education shows students are progressing in a new thinking environment that is creative centered as well as innovative. In my mind, creativity and innovation are in the most general sense the ability to make connections and come up with new ways of generating solutions. When thinking about creativity, most people think of the arts such as painting, sculpture, and music. The method people use to create something through these mediums is considered creative. This could include having influence from the past, having a certain way of doing art, or even......
