Absorption is a term used to describe how nutrients are taken into the body and how food that isn’t digested passes through the body. The process of absorption often takes place in our small intestine.

Chemical digestion the process of breaking down the food we eat is either chemical or mechanical digestion. Chemical digestion starts in the mouth and is how the food we eat is broken down by with the acids and enzymes.

Mechanical digestion the process used to break down food that begins as soon as we start chewing. In doing this the food is broken down in small enough pieces to digest.

...Ashwagandha Human Biology and Nutrition April 12, 2015 What is Ashwagandha? Ashwagandha also known as Indian winter cherry. Ashwagandha is a shrub cultivated in India and North America whose roots have been used for thousands of years by Ayurvedic practitioners in many medicinal ways. The root contains flavonoids and many active ingredients. Ashwagandha is most well-known for its restorative benefits. In Sanskrit Ashwagandha means “the smell of a horse,” indicating that the herb imparts the vigor and strength of a stallion, and has traditionally been prescribed to help people strengthen their immune system after an illness. I have never personally seen ashwagandha but it belongs to the same family as the tomato. Ashwagandha is a small shrub with oval leaves and yellow flowers. It produces red fruit about the size of a raisin. The herb is native to the dry regions of India, northern Africa, and the Middle East, and today is also grown in more mild climates, including the United States. The root and leaf are the parts that are used because they contain the highest amount of steroidal compounds which include the lactones Withaferin A, and carbon-27-glycowithanolides, known best as Withanolides Ashwagandha has been used as an herbal remedy for hundreds of years. It has many applications, and has been used to treat inflammation, fevers, and to protect against infection or illness. It has also been used to boost the immune system and improve memory. Ashwagandha is believed...

...keep the child interesting in eating healthy, I would not have a set menu for the child to follow, rather I would keep things different to avoid boredom with eating. In order to help the child enjoy eating healthy, I would try to include as many good tasting foods in the child's diet as possible. For example, watermelon, turkey, skinless chicken, grapes, cantaloupe, cereal, eggs, and sweet corn are all types of food that can satisfy a child's sweet tooth, all the while providing generous portions of the proper ingredients essential to helping a child grow up to be a healthy adult. Although I believe positive reinforcement is an excellent way to promote good habits in children, I would be very wary of using this technique to promote good nutrition because this would cause the child to like the treat more and the healthy food less. Once the child was old enough to get food on his own, he would skip the healthy part and go stra...

...Childhood obesity is an epidemic in America. What is the relationship of poor nutrition and childhood obesity to disease? Based on the information in the Week Five NGS video, “Teen Obesity and Exercise,” what role does exercise play, if any, in combating childhood obesity? What is the role of government, if any, to prevent this epidemic? Provide a rationale for your answer. Poor nutrition may lead to medical problems in adulthood for children who suffer from obesity. Children that have a poor diet that consist of huge amounts of sugar saturated fat, and cholesterol, it might alter the method the way the body responds to the glucose that is existing in the bloodstream. In a healthy body, insulin is released into the blood to break down the sugar in the bloodstream. Due to a poor diet or obesity, the body may possibly stop reacting to the insulin, which in turn might produce type 2 diabetes. Consuming foods that are high in cholesterol and saturated fat may place a child at risk for high blood cholesterol, and high blood pressure both of which can cause heart disease later on in life. If a child consumes food that contains a great deal of bad cholesterol, or low-density lipoprotein, it might build up and harden in the arteries. Merging high blood pressure with high cholesterol can be a disastrous combination, since it intensifies the danger of a stroke and heart attack. Children who are overweight might have a bigger risk of dying at around age 55 or younger. Children that......

...threatening diseases that come along with malnutrition and eating disorders. By providing a high quality diet and providing adequate daily exercise, preschoolers can balance their recommended calories intake and the energy they burn throughout the day. The nutritional goals that I would put in place for the children in my class are to: understand how food and health are related, understand portion controls and knowledge of foods that are beneficial to the body and food that are not. These goals are achievable by all students and families. It is imperative that children understand the ways that food and health are related. By eating complete healthy meals regularly, children are fueling their bodies, in order to perform day to day activities. When children are not eating balanced nutritious meal, they often feel cranky and tired. “Studies show [eating breakfast] helps kids perform better and get into less behavioral problems at school” (Haupt, 2011). Foods that have a high fat and sugar content cause children to become lethargic, cranky, and moody. This, in turn, hinders absorption of new materials and concepts. Poor nutrition hinders learning on a whole. “More that 60 percent of adults in the United States are overweight or obese, and there are twice as many overweight children and three times as many overweight teens as there were two decades ago” (Trends Effects Solutions, 2004). This is an alarming number and the situation does not look promising for future......
