1.Giving is good for you:
When we give to others it activates the areas of the brain associated with pleasure, social connection and trust.
Altruistic behaviour releases endorphins in the brain and boosts happiness for us as well as the people we help. Studies have shown that giving money away tends to make people happier than spending it on themselves.

(If you see someone who is drowning and throw him a rope, he gets a benefit, no question about it. But you might, too. Your body might flood with feel-good chemicals that have a deep evolutionary heritage. You might get a little extra buffer from life’s stresses. Your heart might beat a little healthier. Your immune system might perk up. Your mood might lift.

Be an influence: "No one has ever become poor by giving.” - Anne Frank In other words, when you are experiencing positive emotions like joy, contentment, and love, you will see more possibilities in your life. These findings were among the first that suggested positive emotions broaden your sense of possibility and open your mind up to more options.

Giving helps you overcome stress:

To help someone you don't know, you have to overcome the natural impulse to avoid risk. Every time you help a stranger, you are reaching out a little, and that can make you feel vulnerable. The theory is that to overcome those fears, your body releases a hormone called oxytocin, which helps you buffer stress while…...

Good Thing Gone Bad

...leave, but figured that my hair was already gone so what more could go wrong. She then proceeded to relax my hair. That might have been the only thing that she did right during this process. After that, she started to wrap my hair and place me under the dryer. For those who do not know what a wrap is, it is a method of combing the hair around the head starting at the crown of the head. Once it is dry, it’s combed out to achieve smooth and silky hair. That is not what I received. She put some wrapping lotion on my hair and combed my hair down around my head and put me under the dryer. I was already feeling shaky about the cutting situation, but now I was mad. I’ve been her 2 hours and nothing good came from it yet. So I looked at my options. It was a Saturday, I did not have an appointment anywhere else and it was getting late. I could never find another shop to take me at that time, so I decided to stay. I waited under that dryer for nearly 2 more hours for her to finish a previous client. She came over check to see if I was dry and told me that she had one more person ahead of me. I wanted to cry. Here I was on my birthday, spending the whole day here and was not satisfied at all. When she was finally ready for me, she combed my hair, sprayed it with some oil sheen, and flat ironed my hair. The whole thing took about 20 minute’s tops. Now I was heated. She turned me around to look at myself in the mirror. When I saw my hair, I wanted to throw up. All...

When Bad Things Happen to Good People

...When Bad Things Happen to Good People Man’s search for understanding why bad things happen to people have raised many issues and challenges resulting to some questioning their faith. When tragedy occurs many are quick to ask why, and begin to question God for allowing those things to happen. We often blame others, ourselves, or even God, resulting to bitterness, hatred, and even loneliness. How tragic the news is when we hear something very distressing or how awful it is when it hits so close to home. Why do we react in that manner? Why must we blame God? Why do bad things happen to good people? Harold Kushner’s, When Bad Things Happen to Good People allows one to better understand why he wrote the book and his positive insight bringing light to a seemingly dark matter. Kushner is a Rabbi, a man of God, whom “spent most of his life trying to help other people believe, and was compelled by a personal tragedy to rethink everything he had been taught about God and God’s ways (p.3)”. Hence, it was difficult for Kushner to fathom why or how this could happen to him, his son, and his family. It is easy to sympathize with Kushner because we would probably have reacted in the same way if we were in his shoes. True, it seems unfair how bad things can happen to some, more than others, especially if one attempts to live a life led by God and believes in the goodness of the world, we ask, "how can God let this happen? Kushner contends that the main......

Are Guns a Good Thing or Bad Thing?

...Are Guns a Good Thing or a Bad Thing Melissa Cushman Vincennes University Jasper Campus English 102 Professor Mayfield 15 April 2013 Are Guns a Good Thing or Bad Thing? Have you ever wondered why the media never shows anything positive that happens due to guns? Guns have never gone off by themselves on purpose. There is always a living person pulling that trigger. The government keeps trying to take away our guns when the President himself has armed security guards for him and his family. People need to take a stand for what they believe in and fight for their rights! The government should perform more extensive background checks instead of just taking the guns away. Guns should not be outlawed because “guns do not kill people; people kill people”. There has been much debate in our country about gun control and whether or not it is necessary. The event that brought all of the debates to the surface was the Sandy Hook shooting that happened on December 14, 2012. Following this tragic event, the country gave political figures and the President of the United States a reason to push for more control on this issue. Some of the biggest problems facing the American people are confiscation, stricter laws, and 2nd Amendment rights (Madison, 2013). When rumors came out that the government wanted to confiscate all of the guns in the country people became outraged. The ones that do not own guns to begin with of course supported this rumor which ended up becoming...

Creation of Euro Is a Good Thing? Discuss

...Firstly, it reduced the transaction cost, no other currency is necessary when conducting business or travelling in the Eurozone. Businesses would no longer have to pay hedging costs which they do today in order to insure themselves against the threat of currency fluctuations. Businesses, involved in commercial transactions in different member states, would no longer have to face administrative costs of accounting for the changes of currencies, plus the time involved. The single European currency also stimulates trade activities and free movement of capital, there would be greater transparency and greater competition as prices are easier to compare thus trades between countries would increase. However, using a single currency would lead to a loss of flexibility. For instance government’s fiscal and monetary policies are restricted because of they are using Euro. When countries are experiencing recession, they are unable to combat recession by loosening their fiscal stance. They would be unable to devalue to boost exports, to borrow more to boost job creation or cut taxes when they see fit because of the currency restriction. Secondly, the loss of national sovereignty .This means the transfer of money and fiscal competencies from national to community level. Economically strong and stable countries would have to co-operate in the field of economic policy with other, weaker, countries, which are more tolerant......

Focus on the Good Things in Life

...Focus on the Good Things in Life I believe that bullying is wrong. Sometimes people can be so oblivious to what they are saying to someone. It doesn’t matter if it’s on purpose or not. People should think about what you say before you say it. I was struggling for the longest time with depression because I felt like I didn’t belong in school. I felt like there was no place for me in school with all the other people. When you’re being bullied sometimes you’re afraid to speak out or tell a teacher or your parents. I let every little thing anyone said about me get to me. It hurt; not just in an emotional way, but a physical way as well. When you’re being bullied you can’t help but feel helpless. I was too scared to tell anyone about my problems. I never told my parents, friends, or my teachers. I was too afraid of being judged even more. Even after the bullying stopped all the words and things people said to me got stuck in my head. The bullying went on for like a year or so and then it went away because I started fixing everything that other people thought were wrong. I got skinnier, I grew my hair out, I just started to try and “fit in”. The things people said to me still float around in my head sometimes. Mostly when I’m lying in bed at night, it all comes back to me. I did struggle in school for a while and I still kind of am, but it’s getting better and I’m a lot more focused on the important things in life, like school. What I’ve learned is that you can’t let the...

Is Divorce a Good or a Bad Thing?

...Is Divorce A Good Or Bad Thing? Introduction Divorce is defined as a marriage ending before any of the spouses die. According to dictionary.com, “divorce is a judicial declaration dissolving a marriage in whole or in part, especially one that releases the husband and wife from all matrimonial obligations.” Some countries in which divorce has become commonplace are the United States and South Africa. Divorce is not considered as big a deal today as it has been in the past. There has been an increase in divorce. Some people believe that the age of a child is an important factor in determining the impact divorce may have on a child (Beekman, 1986). Some also believe that, gender has an impact on the reaction to divorce on both children and parents (Whitton, Rhoades, Stanley, & Markman, 2008). Others believe that the impact divorce may have on parents is when they have less personal relationship commitment to their own marriage and are less confident in their own ability to maintain a happy marriage (Whitton, Rhoades, Stanley, & Markman, 2008). People may also believe that the communities that surround the family unit may be the cause of divorce (Wolfinger, 2005). One of the positive reasons for divorce is that women are becoming dependent and working in many different workforces (Jennifer, 2010). The purpose of this paper is to examine the effects of divorce. In order to do this, the paper is divided in two sections. The first section will examine the...

Fracking: Good Thing

...FRACKING: GOOD THING Natural gas is rapidly emerging as a major fuel of the world economy, meeting the rising requirements of natural gas is hard to achieve. Fracking is one of the most important technologies for natural gas production. Fracking has been used widely in oil and gas industry for decades; it is a technique used to get gas and oil from shale rock. The process of fracking is injecting the mixture of water, sand and chemicals into the rock at a high pressure to release gas (BBC, 2013). Fracking technology experiences long time of development. In 1947, Stanolind Oil conducted the first experimental fracturing to stimulate natural gas; in 1949 Halliburton conducted the first commercial fracturing to extract natural gas (Montgomery and Smith, 2010). Until 2003 fracking was used widely, energy companies actively expand natural gas exploration in Texas and Pennsylvania (Eecworld, 2010). fracking played an important role in America's natural gas resources for many years and countries such as Canada, England and China are actively pursuing implementation of fracking. Nationally, fracking can boost energy industry and promote economic grow in countries.  However, like any advanced technology, it can also raise environmental concerns, cause water and air pollution. Therefore, whether the advantages of fracking worth the disadvantages? Yes, it worth. fracking is good, so it should be used on a massive scale to contribute to the increasing demands of energy. Helping Others

...202 Ethics Class July 25, 2013 Helping Others One day on the way home from work, I was driving on the freeway. I passed a car that had broken down and was sitting on the side of the road. There was a lady and her two little children that were stranded. It was hot outside and I stopped to see if I could help. I gave them a ride to their house, made sure that they would be ok and then I left. I never saw them again. I didn’t know this family; I didn’t stop because I thought that I may win an award or get famous because of it. I stopped because I have been in that position before and know how it feels to be stranded with your children. Why would someone help another person whom they don’t even know? There have been some controversial theories on the helping of others. One theory is from the egoists. A major believer in the egoism theory is the famous author, Ayn Rand. She believes that a person should only help another person if they hold value to them, or if in helping them they will receive something in return, which is all supposed to relate to one’s own happiness. Egoism claims that each person has but one ultimate goal: his or her own welfare. This theory also implies that not everyone can be an egoist. It relies on other people being altruistic. Most altruists believe that each person has an obligation to give pleasure and take away the pains of other people. Altruism involves the unselfish concern for others. It entails doing things only out of a desire to help,......

All Things Good

...Upon His return to Galilee north side He prays for and heal a man that hand had drawn up not neglecting to mention hundreds of others that was also healed. In Galilee on a hill top He then hand-picked His remaining disciples and minister from the famous Sermon on the Mount Matt. 5:1, (MacAdam, 2004). Although Luke wrote a different account about the Sermon on the Mount he stated that Jesus was at the foot of the hill (Lk 6:12). When Jesus returned to Capernaum (Lk 7:1) he encounters a captain of the Roman army (centurion) who’s servant was sick, who asked Jesus to speak the “Word” only and not go to his servant for he believed that his servant would be healed. Jesus was marveled at his centurion faith. Jesus ministry also consisted of baptizing people as John did but with the Holy Spirit where as John Baptist unto repentance (from sin) (Kistemaker, 1982). In the book of Luke 3:23 he stated the ministry of Jesus began when He was thirty years of age and lasted until he was thirty-three years old. In this short period of time He accomplish a lot, he taught about God being love and man having love for one another this message should of outweighed the miracles and healings. Jesus continue to speak of the scripture being fulfilled in their presence, referring to himself as the fulfillment. This help to establish his ministry along with teaching the “Good News and setting the captives free from their bondage. In the New Testament Paul picked it up by stating “So now faith,......

Love Is Blind, Among Other Things

...Love is Blind, Among Other Things “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” is a comedy by William Shakespeare set in and around the city of Athens during a time when the belief in the existence of magic and magical beings was not outrageous. The characters used form a wide variety of social classes from royalty to the lowly working class which helps to show that the affects of love are not confined to any specific group of people, but that everyone is equally afflicted. Helena is one of the four young lovers depicted in this play and has a unique perspective on love by being the only female who does not have a suitor. Shakespeare uses Helena’s first soliloquy at the end of act one, scene one, along with the play itself to help solve some of love’s more mysterious questions such as: why people love others who do not love them; why people fall in love with certain people; and why people fall in and out of love. Why is it that some people love others who do not love them back? When Helena is following Demetrius through the forest while he is trying to find Hermia and Lysander, Demetrius constantly berates Helena, telling her that he does not love her “I love thee not, therefore pursue me not.” (2.1.188) and that it sickens him to look upon her “For I am sick when I do look on thee.” (2.1.212). Helena, feeling Demetrius’ scorn, continues to follow him and profess her love for him “The more you beat me, I will fawn on you.” (2.1.204). The logic for why she follows him cannot exist in the......

Helping Others

...Ashley Paster Helping Others 3/26/15 Mother Teresa said it best, “Give, but give until it hurts.” Meaning we were blessed with the ability to give and we give until there is nothing left. Go out of your way to help the people around you and make a difference in their life. I decided to choose this topic because every now and then I see that sometimes we are either giving too much or not enough. In general, this topic is very important to me; one of my life goals is to give whatever I can to anyone in need. I always make myself available to friends, family, and/or even strangers. There is a satisfying feeling when you know you are making a difference in someone’s life. Helping others can change your whole outlook on life for ever. Helping the people you love is such an honor. There is no one better to help you out than someone you care about deeply (2011, April 3). I believe that we are supposed to do whatever we need to for our family. For example, my sister, shelby, was recently in a car accident and I did everything I could for her. The accident was not her fault, but she was the one left with a totaled car and two hand injuries. I had to help her get dressed, take showers, cutting up her food, etc. She was so devastated that she could not do anything herself, so I gladly gave her all of my time and more. As a family, we should always stick together and help each other until for some reason we cannot anymore. There is such abundance love when helping out the people...
