The 58 year old executive has been with the company since 1986 being hired in as controller working his way to Chief Financial Officer and the finally to the Chief Executive Officer. Mr. Kelly attended the University of Texas where he received a bachelor degree in accounting.
Southwest Airlines is a very unique company in as they have never had a non-profitable year, they continue to serve as the country’s largest discount airlines, they have a straight forward philosophy of taking care of their employees, great customer service, and having fun. While other airlines have failed, actually almost all of the large airlines have failed, Southwest continues to grow and at the head of the company is Gary Kelly. Mr. Kelly has been with Southwest for most of the companies’ existence, and together, they have developed a unique culture and style. Most of which he inherited when he took the office of CEO. The former CEO and co-founder Herb Kelleher, was a very aggressive leader that like to lead in a very unorthodox style. His management was quick and to the point, always thought of himself as the underdog. Kelleher cared greatly for his employees, for his customers, but most of all, having fun. In the seventies, the airline had its stewardess dressed in hot paints, and sing songs to the guests. Today they still are very casual and continue to have fun with the guest on the plane, they continue to throw outlandish parties for the employees. Kelly being in accounting was seen to be conservative yet he has a crazy side as…...

Kelly Services

...Kelly Services To find out if Kelly Services is under performing or over performing, it is a good idea to take a look at the company's financial statements and evaluate its condition base on this. They should compare the company’s financial ratios relative to their competitors. Some of the main items used in valuing a company’s performances are: sales, earnings per share, dividends, current assets, current liabilities, and long-term debt. By using these items they can determine the company’s financial ratios to value the company’s health relative to their competitors. A company can benefit from tax advantages by incorporating debt into its capital structure. The reason for this is that interest on debt is tax deductible on a company’s income statement. When a company issues debt in the form of bonds the interest paid is taxed only once at the personal level. On the other hand, equity has no tax advantage to a corporation. The dividends paid to equity holders are taxed twice, once at the corporate level and once at the personal level. At the current time Kelly Services is only equity financed. However, the company could benefit from this tax advantage by incorporating debt into their capital structure. Even though debt has an advantage to the company’s financial statements, it does not increase overall value to the firm. As company alters their capital structure they are changing the risk of the firm, while at the same time they are changing the required rate of......

...How People Make Economic Decisions Paper Gary Brockington ECO/212 7-25-2010 Anil Marthur How People Make Economic Decisions Paper People make economic decisions every day throughout their lives. In this paper I will describe the three economic principles of individual decision-making. I will provide an example of a decision which I took part in and compared the marginal benefits against the marginal costs. I will also give those marginal benefits and costs acquainted with that decision. I will tell which incentives could have led me into making a different decision. Last I will explain how the principles of economics affect people’s decisions, interaction, and how the economy works as a whole. There are three economic ideas concerning people who have to make economic decisions. One is people are rational. This means that an individual always weighs the benefits and costs, and make their decisions only if the benefits outweighs the costs (Hubbard, O’Brian, 2010). The second economic idea is people always respond to economic incentives. This simply means that people respond to incentives from variety of motives (Hubbard, O’Brian, 2010). The third idea is that optimal decisions are made at the margin. This means that when he or she is making a decision in which they are going to hit the jackpot or lose everything. There have been many cases in which I had to look at the marginal costs and the marginal benefits. The biggest decision I had to make was whether I......

Kelly in Japan

...The Japanese culture and customs are very different from what Kelly was used to in the United States. Within the case, the biggest issue with the Japanese businessmen that Kelly saw was the issue of being a woman. With the Japanese culture, many Japanese men do not relate easily to women with authority. This presented a major problem with kelly as she was seen more as an "office lady" then the program manager of her start up internet services company. Her talent as a manager was being overlooked due to their culture. Women in Japan between the ages of 25-30 tend to leave the workplace to start families and may return eventually to a part-time job. Whereas the women in the United States accounted for a 51% workforce in high-paying management positions recorded in 2007. Japan is a highly masculine country. According to previous chapters, another culture clash was the fact that when the Japanese are confronted with a serious question or situation they tend to disregard the problem with either leaving the situation, lowering their heads and becoming quiet, or even leaving the room in a business meeting. This stems from Japan being a less assertive country and neutral in emotional orientation. This can make Japanese businessmen "hard to read". This was the reason Kelly became easily frustrated when her employees did not present the planned proposal. A business card to a Japanese businessman is a very prestigious thing. Kelly did not do enough research as a manager with a country......
