Introduction Business research is very important in solving business related problems. Business research, “is a process of planning, acquiring, analyzing and disseminating relevant data, information, and insights to decision makers in ways that mobile the organization to take appropriate actions, that in turn, maximize business performance” (Cooper & Schindler, 2006). Nonprofit organizations are currently having a tough time in this economy because of budget cuts. One place in particular suffering is the YMCA. This business research plan will form a research question, which arose from this dilemma as well as define the problem the YMCA is currently having. Along with the research question, an appropriate research design will be defined in order to try to fix the problem appropriately and then a sample design used for collecting data will be defined.
Research Question Development When conducting research of any kind, it is crucial to address any potential problems that may arise to ensure that an organization is operating at its optimal level. Because of the turmoil in the economy, nonprofit organizations all over the nation are experiencing a tough time due to budget cuts. In addition to a lower budget there has been a significant decrease in employee satisfaction possibly due to a decrease in raises and incentives for YMCA employees. Finally, there has been an increase in employee absenteeism and an increase in turnover rate. A recession or hurting economy ultimately results in serious problems within YMCA's organization and has led to a tough question that must be addressed; If the organization’s budget is very tight this year due to this turmoil, “What can YMCA do to improve employee morale without encountering a major increase in spending?” The research design for YMCA will be a combination of descriptive and quantitative research. Descriptive and Survey Research Design will attempt to depict and explain the present conditions at YMCA by using many subjects and questionnaires to fully describe employee morale. Cross-sectional studies will report the attitudes of employees at this time and longitudinal studies will report the changes in morale of YMCA employees over time. It is expected that the sizeable volume of information that will be obtained through the use of this research design can show the central predispositions of the employees. Descriptive study will help YMCA to discover which percentage of employees are dissatisfied through the use of a descriptive survey. Data will be obtained through structured interviews conducted by a third party. Survey Research carried out through the use of confidential questionnaires will provide further numeric description of the attitudes and opinions of the employees at YMCAs across the nation.
Sample Design A sampling design attempts to answer the research questions and problem. A sampling design consisted of a pertinent population and with specific parameters. In answering the question, “What percentages of employees at the YMCA are dissatisfied with their jobs?” The populations will consist of random samples of YMCA staff from all 50 states. Questionnaires will be offered to each employee, and interviews will then be conducted from a random sample drawn from questionnaires. This process will be chosen to ensure an accurate and appropriate sample size, utilizing probability samples, and make for the chance of limited sampling errors. The idea behind this sampling design is to keep the cost to the YMCA low but still maintain a balanced and accurate sample design, which depends on the properties displayed in the parameter and data collection.
Conclusion
In order for the YMCA to improve employee morale, it is imperative that they use business research. Business research will provide the YMCA with the necessary data to appropriately address their employee morale issues. Business research is not only an important factor in addressing employee morale, but can also be used to solve any other business related problems that arise because it provides the company with information that might not otherwise be available to decision makers.
