Although modern management theory dates primarily from the early twentieth century, there was serious thinking and theorizing about managing many years before. Two events are especially significant to management history. First, in 1776, Adams Smith published The Wealth of Nations, in which he argued the economic advantages that organizations and society would gain from the division of labor (or job specialization). The second important event is the industrial revolution. Starting in the late eighteenth century when machine power was substituted for human power, it became more economical to manufacture goods in factories than at home. These large, efficient factories needed someone to forecast demand, ensure that enough material was on hand to make products, assign task to people, direct daily activities, and so fort. That “someone” was managers, and these managers would need formal theories to guide them in running these large organizations. It wasn’t until the early 1900s, however, that the first steps were taken toward developing such theories. The evolution of modern management thinking begins in the nineteenth century and flourished during the twentieth.

Today's management theory is the result of the interdisciplinary efforts of many people.

Management thinking, however, was slow to evolve during the century. During this period two principal management theorists took up this challenge and…...

Communication and Information Management Assignment

...Communication and Information Management Assignment Communication and Information Management Assignment 1. Mass Media Trends Mass media consists of a large range of diversified media channels that reach a large audience through mass communication. There are seven trends that characterize modern mass media; audience segmentation, convergence, increased audience control, multiple platforms, user-generated content, mobile media, and social media (J.R. Dominick, 2011). I think mobile media has the greatest effect on society because these days people cannot live without their phones. Literally anything and everything one could imagine can be done from a smart phone and because access is so instant, transferable, and continuous, it is changing the way we live, work, and play. Before the outbreak of smart phones, audiences had to physically go to their media source, giving their time and attention in order to receive its messages. Today, people carry their media source everywhere they go and are notified by an alert sound or vibration when something that they have deemed important is available to them. 2. Classifying Mass Communications There are two approaches to classifying mass communications. "The functional approach emphasizes the way that audiences use mass communication and the benefits people receive from media consumption" (J.R. Dominick, 2011). This approach seeks to analyze why people consume the media they do, how they feel about it; positive or negative,......

Management Assignment

...BPMN 1013 PRINCIPLES OF MANAGEMENT Group Assignment CASE STUDY 2 Transparency Works Successfully marketing something—an automobile, a dating service or a politician—requires skill, creativity and an understanding of the target market. For short-term products this usually is enough. In 1975 a California advertising executive came up with the idea of a “pet rock.” It was an ordinary rock, resting on fake grass in a small cardboard box, with instructions titled The Care and Training of your Pet Rock. The unit sold for about four dollars, and it was wildly popular—for less than one year. But this product is an example of a “one hit wonder”—so its creators did not need to worry about whether they seemed to be reliable or trustworthy or explicit about their company’s practices. But very few companies have the luxury of casting aside concerns about image. For big, medium and small companies today, the emphasis usually is on long-term survival, and this requires a good public image. So how can a company survive in today’s fast-changing world? Through transparency—in the presentation and defense of its products, and in its day-to-day behavior. This mean sharing, to whatever extent possible, facts about the company—how it is set up, how it operates, what its salaries and bonuses are based on, and how its workers are expected to treat customers and each other. There are many examples of companies doing precisely this, and succeeding. One of the most recent examples is......

If the person smiles naturally, that’s very important to us, because this is something you can’t force.’ In a culture featuring more reserved expressions, service personnel who smile naturally will indeed become valuable and rare resources appreciated by hotel guests. ...UNIT 101 – FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT LECTURER NAME TOPIC NAME Financial Analysis SUBMISSION DATE: STUDENT NAME: STUDENT ID: I EXECUTIVE SUMMARY With steady sales in 2012, Orica's performance for the 2012 financial year looked promising. Analysing the Orica Financial Report 2012 shows that although sales were high, the expenses increased for the year, and their net profit dropped considerably. This report analyses Orica's overall performance for 2012. Utilising the data provided by their Income Statement, Balance Sheet and Cash Flow Statement, the financial analysis ratios: Liquidity, Efficiency, Profitability, Financing and Investment ratios, are all calculated and analysed to present their financial standing at the end of the year. Comparing the relationships of these ratios reveals that Orica decreased their liquidity, but suffered lower profitability with heavy influences from Minova’s impairment of goodwill. With high asset utilisation and stable efficiency, Orica should focus on improving their maintenance and reliability by addressing the Kooragang plant shutdown. Furthermore, Orica is financing more with debt than equity which introduces some risk to the company given their higher expenses for 2012. Finally, the investment ratios indicate that Orica could be poised for high growth with a stable return, but should first focus on maximising their plants and equipment. Management Assignment

...over-communicate when you are asking your organization to change. Every successful executive, who has led a change management effort, makes this statement. (Heathfield, 2010, p.10) The most important strategy used by Agilent Technologies was open communication channels. Agilent was consistent in having the open channels, and in turn gained and kept the trust of the employees, regardless of the announcement of mass scale layoffs. Agilent did the imperative thing in communication, which is making the employees feel as though they are part of decision making process, and together they will find a solution. (Goodman, 2001, p.120) Agilent Technologies achieved this through communicating through a staff newsletter, InfoSparks, which came out twice a week, coffee talks, brainstorming meetings, and public address system speeches. This strategy helped employees feel informed and not as though they were being left in the dark. They were made well aware of the organisation’s situations, and how senior management aimed at solving these issues. Face-to-face meetings and assurance that there would be no across the board cuts were also forms of open communication. Agilent would identify the specific staff member, and they would be told directly by their managers if they were being let go. This style of communication emphasises the honesty of the organisation and senior management, but also helped calm the anxiety of the employees as to whether they were going to be let go or not. This......
